Called to Love

A retreat for young Catholics

Called to Love

9th - 11th May 2025

Masculinity and Femininity: nature, challenges and wisdom

“Man, whom God created ‘male and female,’ bears the divine image impressed in the body ‘from the beginning’; man and woman constitute, so to speak, two diverse ways of ‘being a body’ that are proper to human nature in the unity of this image.”

Pope Saint John Paul II, General audience, 2nd January 1980

About the ‘Called to Love’ retreats

Called to Love is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the Catholic vision for human love and sexuality, and the discernment around the Sacrament of Matrimony.

Who are the retreats for?

The retreats are aimed at young adults, whether single, dating or engaged.

What’s involved?

The retreats consist of some input, time for prayer and liturgy, discussion and an evening of dinner and dance!

The input will focus on the following themes:

  • The Christian understanding of the human person as male and female
  • Contemporary challenges to an authentic masculinity and femininity
  • Spiritual wisdom for the moral life
  • The virtue and role of chastity in human maturation

The retreat is structured around four sessions, with opportunities for discussion, for prayer and reflection, and for an evening social.

The retreat is framed by morning and evening prayer, with Mass, Adoration and the opportunity for confession.

Stefan and Ella Kaminski both have Licentiates from the John Paul II Institute for Studies in Marriage and Family Life, having dedicated their studies to the themes of human love and sexual complementarity. Stefan serves as Director of The Christian Heritage Centre, where he has been creating and delivering Catholic formation content for the last five years. Ella previously worked at the John Paul II Institute in Rome, before joining Stefan in Lancashire following their marriage. She is engaged in teaching dogmatic theology to seminarians on the one hand, and 5-year-olds on the other. Together, they offer marriage preparation courses and ongoing formation for catechetists.

Fr Peter Littleton is a priest of the Diocese of Southwark. He is engaged in a variety of ministries, including teaching, hospital chaplaincy and young adult ministry. He is an increasingly sought-after spiritual director and is engaged in vocations promotion and direction.

Theodore House offers a wonderful venue for any residential course. The tranquil and beautiful surroundings of the Stonyhurst estate offer a peaceful setting with endless opportunities for walks. Guests will enjoy the comfortable recreational spaces and a beautifully lanscaped garden.

Be still and know that I am God

Weekend Retreat

'Be still and know
that I am God'

14th - 17th November 2025

Exploring Mindfulness, Psychology and the Christian life

Led by Fr Roger Dawson, SJ, Liz Lord and Steve Noone

This weekend explores the human condition through your own life story, in the context of the Gospel and the Christian spiritual life, using mindfulness skills and contemplative Christian prayer.

In its methodology, this retreat seeks to reclaim practices that are common to mindfulness for the Christian tradition of contemplative prayer. In particular, mindfuless practices share common ground with the tradition of apophatic prayer and theology that is deeply rooted in the monastic and the Eastern Orthodox traditions.

The retreat will make use of such practices to help participants gain a greater awareness of their own experiences, to exercise a discipline of the mind, and to place them on the threshold of prayer, with an attentiveness and disposition to God’s presence.

This retreat will offer several talks over the weekend, framed by Mass, communal prayer in the morning and evening, and Adoration.

Free time for walks and reflection is built into each retreat.

‍Fr Roger Dawson SJ is a Jesuit priest, previously Director of St Beuno’s Jesuit Spirituality Centre. He is trained as a clinical psychologist and has a long experience as retreat and spiritual director. He is currently the Superior of the Jesuits in Scotland.

Liz Lord is a tutor on the MSt in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) at the University of Oxford. Formerly she was an assistant head teacher and has worked in education at all levels.

Steve Noone is a recently retired clinical psychologist who has used mindfulness skills extensively in his practice and teaching.

Unveiled Faces

Weekend Retreat

Unveiled Faces:
Healing & Transformation
with the Saints

27th- 29th June 2025

"It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick" (Mt 9:12)

Led by Fr Emmanuel Mansford, CFR

Holiness begins with the acknowledgment of our need for healing and redemption. The saints were not perfect people. Like us, they were born into a broken world and experienced their own share of brokenness. Progressively they were transformed by the Lord’s grace and mercy. The saints show us this very real human journey lived out in very real human ways.

During this retreat the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal will help us to acknowledge our own wounds and seek the healing power of grace as experienced concretely by different saints.

This retreat will offer several talks over the weekend, framed by opportunities for Mass, communal prayer in the morning and evening, and Adoration.

Free time for walks and reflection is built into each retreat.

Fr Emmanuel Mansford is originally from a small village in Bedfordshire. He joined the Franciscan of the Renewal in the Bronx, NY in 1998 and made his solemn vows in 2003.  Ordained a priest in 2007, he lived for several years in the friary in the East End of London where he served as the local superior. In 2014 he became the vocation director for the friars and lived in New York City where he was involved in the friars apostolates of preaching the Gospel and serving the needy.  He has a passion for preaching and people and loves to see God’s people encounter Him and come to life through the Gospel.  He also enjoys playing and watching football and is a boyhood fan of Luton Town FC. He recently moved back to the UK to serve with the friars in their mission in Bradford.

Br. Mariano Bonaventura CFR is from Brazil and has lived in Mexico, Honduras, and the USA. Currently residing in England, he holds a keen interest in the theology of Saint Bonaventure.

Theodore House offers a wonderful venue for any residential course. The tranquil and beautiful surroundings of the Stonyhurst estate offer a peaceful setting with endless opportunities for walks. Guests will enjoy the comfortable recreational spaces and a beautifully lanscaped garden.

The Eucharist and the Liturgy

Diaconal retreat

10th - 12th October 2025

The Eucharist
& the Liturgy

A retreat for permanent deacons, to include spouses

Preached by Fr Matthew Jarvis, OP, Prior of the Rosary Shrine

In this Year of Hope, our annual deacons’ retreat will turn to the ‘source and summit’ of that hope: the Eucharist.

The retreat will firstly explore ways of understanding the Real Presence, how the bread and wine are totally converted into the Body and Blood of Christ, gaining insights from the Church Fathers and medieval theologians like St Thomas Aquinas.

With St Irenaeus, the Doctor of Unity, consideration will be given to the seeking of fuller unity in the Church, through the relation between the communion of the Church and the communion of the Eucharist.

The retreat will also examine the meaning of liturgical texts and gestures, such as the office of Corpus Christi and the elevation of the Chalice.

Finally, the pastoral application of this theology and spirituality will be explored, such as the encouraging of frequent reception of Holy Communion with the proper preparation and dispositions.

Extend your retreat with a further 24 hours of private recollection or time out with the option to arrive on Thursday evening.

  • The retreat is offered specifically for permanent deacons, married or unmarried
  • Deacons’ wives are welcome to attend and participate
  • The retreat will be preached, with opportunities for confession.
  • The retreat will maintain silent recollection during the day, with time for sharing and social amongst participants in the evening
  • The retreat timetable will include daily Mass, a Holy Hour and Compline.
  • Single and twin rooms are available on a first come, first served basis
  • Option to arrive on Thursday for an extra 24 hours of private recollection

Fr Matthew Jarvis is Prior of St Dominic’s Priory (the Rosary Shrine) in north London. He also serves as Provincial Secretary for the Dominican friars in Britain and as a member of the Order’s international liturgical commission. His intellectual interests include theology and church history, especially of the Patristic and medieval periods. He is presently researching the medieval and modern practice of Dominican chant for a part-time DPhil at Oxford University.

The Martyr-Saints of the North-West

Weekend Retreat

The Martyr-Saints
of the North-West

12th - 14th September 2025

Exploring the lives of the region's Reformation saints

A weekend’s reflection on the Catholic legacy of the Salford area, led by Mgr John Allen, Diocese of Salford

Part-retreat, part-biographical study, the aim of this weekend is to draw closer to the saintly martyrs and confessors of the region from the Reformation era.

The North-West was a hotbed of Catholic recusancy during the Protestant Reformation, with a remarkable number of priests and lay men and women being prepared to pay the ultimate price for confessing their faith in Christ’s Church. Amongst these were such figures as St John Southworth, who grew up at the nearby Salmesbury Hall, was executed at Tyburn, London in 1654, and is named as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales.

The retreat will offer a historical and biographical examination of some of the leading confessors of the Catholic faith, as well as a spiritual reflection on their lives and on the cost of witnessing to the faith today.

Mgr John Allen has recently published “A Popular History of the Salford Diocese”, with a foreword by Eamon Duffy, and is eminently equipped to offer a closer study of the lives of the area’s Catholic life.

This retreat will offer several talks over the weekend, framed by opportunities for Mass, communal prayer in the morning and evening, and Adoration.

Free time for walks and reflection is built into each retreat.

Born and brought up in Greater Manchester, Mgr John Allen trained for the priesthood at the Venerable English College, studying at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He served as archivist at the Venerabile and trained in the Scuola Vaticana di Paleografia e Diplomatica at the Vatican Archives. Present in St Peter’s at the opening of the Second Vatican Council on 11 October 1962, he was ordained priest that same month. He has served in the diocese of Salford as curate and parish priest and for eighteen years was secretary to Bishop Thomas Holland. Pope St Paul VI appointed him a papal chaplain in 1977. In 1982 Pope St John Paul II named him a prelate of honour. Elected to the Old Brotherhood of the English Secular Clergy in 1999, he has been president since 2014. Publications include The English Hospice in Rome (ed.), The International Eucharistic Congresses: A Spiritual Odyssey 1881-2016, Palazzola 1920-2020, A Popular History of the Salford Diocese and Pilgrims of Hope: Out and About in the Salford Diocese.

The Search for Truth: St Edith Stein

Weekend Retreat

The Search for Truth:
St Edith Stein

14th - 16th March 2025

Exploring the life and teaching of St Edith Stein

Led by Fr Matthew Blake, OCD

This retreat explores the life and faith of St Edith Stein (also called Teresa Benedicta of the Cross), a convert from Judaism who was executed in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. Born into a large Jewish family in Poland in 1891, she rejected God as a teenager, but her brilliant mind and her turn to philosophy eventually led her to recognise the truth through a reading of the life of St Teresa of Avila.

From there, she gravitated to the works of St Thomas Aquinas to further her new-found knowledge, continuing her life-long quest for meaning and truth in the light of her baptism and reception into the Church in 1922.

Edith joined the Carmelite monastery in Cologne when her teaching mission to Catholic women was blocked by the Nazis on the grounds of her Jewish heritage. She was moved for her own safety to the Carmel in Echt, Holland, but was rounded up with other Jewish converts to Catholicism by the Nazis, and taken to Auschwitz for execution in 1942.

This retreat will offer several talks over the weekend, framed by opportunities for Mass, communal prayer in the morning and evening, and Adoration.

Free time for walks and reflection is built into each retreat.

Fr Matthew Blake is a Carmelite priest. Originally from Ireland, he has lived and worked  in the UK for more than thirty years. His ministry has mainly involved retreat direction, for which he is well-known in the UK, and he has also worked in many different parishes.

Theodore House offers a wonderful venue for any residential course. The tranquil and beautiful surroundings of the Stonyhurst estate offer a peaceful setting with endless opportunities for walks. Guests will enjoy the comfortable recreational spaces and a beautifully lanscaped garden.

Men’s Retreat – Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius

Men's Retreat

Spiritual Exercises
of St Ignatius

30th March - 4th April 2025

A 5-day version of the Ignatian Exercises for men

This five-day retreat for men is a shortened form of the full Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. As is proper for the Spiritual Exercises, the retreat is a silent one (with the exception of one-to-one meetings with the retreat guides).

The Exercises are a synthetic and practical presentation of the central truths of the Catholic faith—God, the meaning of life, the eternal destiny of mankind, the life of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race—in the form of meditations, examination of conscience and prayers.

The aim of the Exercises is to find peace of heart, to free oneself of worldly attachments and to discover the will of God for the salvation of the soul.

Each day is framed by 4 or 5 talks given by one or other of the two priests who are preaching the retreat, with time for private prayer after each talk.

The retreat is conducted in silence.

The priests will be available for one-to-one conversation and confessions on a daily basis.

There will be daily Mass celebrated in Latin, with the option of Mass to be additionally celebrated in the Tridentine Rite upon request. The Rosary will be said daily.

The retreat will be preached by the Monks of St Joseph’s Abbey, Flavigny. The monastic community was established in 1988 by Dom Augustin Marie Joly, who entrusted it with a specific apostolate of preaching spiritual retreats for men. In 2021, the community founded a new priory in Solignac, France.

The monks have been offering these retreats at both Flavigny since 1988 and at Solignac since 2021, as well as at other locations in the UK and elsewhere.

For questions about the spiritual exercises, the monks can be contacted at [email protected]

St Teresa and St Therese

Diaconal retreat

St Teresa & St Therese:
A Comparison in Prayer

Friday 4th - Sunday 6th October [2024]

A retreat for permanent deacons, to include spouses, examining the teachings of St Teresa and St Therese on the life of prayer

Preached by Fr Michael Miners, OCDS of the Diocese of Birmingham

As the Year of Prayer progresses, this retreat will be an opportunity to re-engage with two, towering figures of the interior life: St Teresa of Avila and St Therese of Lisieux. At a time when the faithful are continually and increasingly called to prayer for peace in the world and for the conversion of hearts, the retreat will aim to offer nourishment for both the deacon’s own life of prayer and for his ministry of preaching.

The retreat will make particular use of the “Interior Castle” to examine St Teresa of Avila’s understanding of prayer, comparing this with the influence of St John of the Cross in St Therese’s writings.

The option is also available to arrive the day before, on Thursday evening, and to extend the retreat with a further 24 hours of private recollection or time out.

  • The retreat is offered specifically for permanent deacons, married or unmarried
  • Deacons’ wives are welcome to attend and participate
  • Single and twin rooms are available on a first come, first served basis
  • The retreat will be preached, with opportunities for confession.
  • The retreat timetable will include daily Mass, a Holy Hour and Compline.
  • Option to arrive on Thursday for an extra 24 hours of private recollection

Father Michael Miners o.c.d.s was born in Blackburn in 1953. He read theology at St Johns College, Durham, becoming a Catholic there in 1974. He undertook postgraduate research in Durham and then at Keble College, Oxford, before joining Ushaw College Seminary. He was ordained as a priest of the Order of Discaled Carmelites in 1984. Fr Michael has worked in both parish ministry and in formation as a novice master and master of students. He edited the Spiritual Journal “Mount Carmel” for eight years, and has a long experience of preaching retreats and offering Spiritual Direction. After five years as Catholic Chaplain at Keele University (1993-1998) he became a priest of the Archdiocese of Birmingham. The Fatherhood of the Priest

Clergy retreat

The Fatherhood of the Priest

Monday 28th April - Friday 2nd May [2025]

“I became your father in Christ Jesus through the Gospel”

Preached by Fr Jose Granados, Superior General of the Disciples of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary and Vice-President emeritus of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies in Marriage and Family Life

What does it mean for a man to become a father? And how does Christian fatherhood inform the priesthood?

The priesthood today faces a duplicate challenge: that of the priest’s identity before a secular world, and that of adequately understanding masculinity in a post-modern society.

In this retreat, Fr Jose Granados, dcmj, will first offer a theological reflection on the nature of fatherhood, before moving to the novelty of the Christian fatherhood inaugurated by Christ, in order to finally consider the priesthood as a Sacrament of the Father.

Fr Granados is a widely respected sacramental theologian, a consultor to multiple Vatican dicasteries, author of numerous articles and volumes, as well as an experienced pastor and formator.

  • Secular and religious clergy, deacons and seminarians welcome
  • The retreat will be preached, with opportunities for confession.
  • Clergy are welcome to celebrate Mass individually at their own time or to concelebrate, using both Theodore House Oratory and St Peter’s Church.
  • Daily Holy Hour and Compline.

Rev. José Granados, dcjm, is the Superior General of the Disciples of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary and co-founder and president of The Veritas Amoris Project

Fr. Granados earned a Doctorate of Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome (2004, Bellarmine Award). He also holds a degree in Industrial Engineering from the Pontifical University of Comillas (ICAI), Madrid. He teaches theology of marriage at St. John Vianney Theological Seminary (Denver, CO) and at the Séminaire International d’Ars (France).

From 2004 to 2009 Fr. Granados taught dogmatic theology at the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family at The Catholic University of America. From 2010 to 2019 Fr. Granados was the Vice President and Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the Pontifical John Paul II Institute, Central See (Rome). He is a member of the scientific council of the journals Revista española de teología and Gregorianum

He has been a consultor for the Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith (2013-2020), to the Dicastery for the Laity, the Family and Life (2018-2023), and to the Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops (2015-2020).

He has authored several publications including; “An Introduction to Sacramental Theology. Signs of Christ in the Flesh”, CUA Press, Washington, DC 2021; “Una sola carne en un solo Espíritu. Teología del matrimonio,” Palabra, Madrid 2014; “La carne si fa amore. Il corpo, cardine della storia della salvezza,” Cantagalli, Siena 2010. Rev. Granados is co-author, with Carl Anderson, of “Called to Love: Approaching John Paul II’s Theology of the Body.”

In the Footsteps of the Great Saintly Priests

Clergy retreat

In the Footsteps
of the Great Saintly Priests

Monday 14th - Friday 18th October [2024]

Reflections on St John Fisher, St John Vianney and St Padre Pio

Preached by Fr Armand de Malleray, FSSP

“The priest is not a priest for himself; he does not give himself absolution; he does not administer the Sacraments to himself. He is not for himself, he is for you… where there is no longer any priest there is no sacrifice, and where there is no longer any sacrifice there is no religion.” (Saint John Vianney)

The saints offer models and examplars of holiness for every walk of life: a particularly worthy focus during this Year of Prayer.

This retreat will pick out some of the great priest saints of Europe – St John Fisher, St John Vianney and St Pio of Pietrelcina – to offer a reflection on the character and ministry of the priestly life.

St John Fisher stands as a reformation-era St John the Baptist, most recognised for his objection to King Henry VIII’s divorce of Catherine of Aragon and for his subsequent refusal to acknowledge Anne Boleyn’s daughter as heir to the throne. A cameo ring depicting Aristotle, which belonged to John Fisher, is held at Stonyhurst, having been presented to the College by relatives of Fisher in the 19th century.

The ring will be loaned for the retreat by the College to the CHC, in order to accompany the clergy during this time of prayer.

St John Vianney also experienced the turmoil and upheaval of religious life brought about in his own country, by the French Revolution. Known for his tirelessness in reconciling people to God, he is rightly upheld as a model of a curator of souls.

St Pio of Pietrelcina is widely known for the gifts he received of the stigmata and of spiritual insight, and his profound piety and charity.

Cameo ring owned by St John Fisher
  • Secular and religious clergy, deacons and seminarians welcome!
  • The retreat will be preached, with two talks every day (one on Monday afternoon and one on Friday morning)
  • There will be opportunities for confession
  • Clergy are welcome to celebrate Mass individually and in whichever rite, or to concelebrate
  • Theodore House Oratory and St Peter’s Church available for the celebration of Mass
  • Daily Holy Hour and Compline

Fr Armand de Malleray began his ministry in the Southwark Archdiocese in 2001. He has been giving clergy retreats at various venues in England and abroad for over two decades. Formerly rector of St Mary’s Shrine in the Liverpool Archdiocese, he is now based in Bedford. He is the author of the following books:
