• Clergy are welcome to concelebrate Mass with Bishop Varden or to celebrate Mass individually at their own time, using both Theodore House Oratory and St Peter’s Church.

 Bishop Varden was born on 13th May 1974.

He entered the Catholic Church in 1993 during his Masters studies in Cambridge, where he went on to complete his doctorate in Theology and Religious studies. He obtained a Licentiate in Sacred Theology at the Pontifical Oriental Institute, Rome. 

He joined Mount St Bernard Abbey in 2002, after which he spent several years teaching Christian anthropology, monastic history and Syriac language in Rome. In 2013 he was appointed as the Abbey’s superior, before being named Bishop of Trondheim in 2019.

Bishop Varden has become a highly-respected authority on the spiritual life, having most recently preached the annual Spiritual Exercises for the Vatican at the invitation of Pope Leo XIV. 

Theodore House offers a wonderful venue for any retreat. The tranquil and beautiful surroundings of the Stonyhurst estate offer a peaceful setting and endless opportunities for walks.
