***General information***

This course is intended especially for novices to the Prosopon technique, and will accompany the student through all stages of writing an icon.

Those who are more experienced in the Prosopon technique are nonetheless welcome to sign up for this course, but are encouraged to consider October’s course instead.

***Icon***

St Mary Magdalene, “Myrrhbearer” and “Apostle to the Apostles,” is revered in the Christian tradition for her role as devout follower of Christ and as first witness to the Resurrection. Present at the Crucifixion, and the first to return to the tomb to venerate and anoint the body of Christ, she was the one to announce the empty tomb to the apostles. According to the Gospel of John, she was the first person to see the risen Lord. According to tradition, she also had the daring to preach the Resurrection of Christ to the emperor Tiberius, showing him an egg which miraculously turned red, earning her the title “Equal to the Apostles.” As such, the image of Mary Magdalene represents and evokes the very core of the Christian faith. It has also been noted that the Gospels set a unique precedent among the religious literature of the antique world in naming St Mary Magdalene and the other women disciples of Christ by name and devoting a sizable amount of text to their important roles.
